Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor for the school. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her TV debut on an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which was added to her resume in the year 1996.
